WCHS Radio Wins National Edward R. Murrow Award

(New York) -- WCHS Radio and the MetroNews Radio Network were announced as the winners of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow National award for radio excellence.

The award was presented in the category of Continuing Coverage for the station and networks presentation of the Sago Mine Disaster during January 2006.   WCHS/MetroNews had one of the first reporters on the scene in the early stages of the mine explosion and search that stretched over three days.    MetroNews also provided the first reaction of Governor Joe Manchin who was appearing on MetroNews Talkline live from the Sugar Bowl in Atlanta when he first learned of the mine accident.

WCHS/MetroNews has earned a number of Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards since 2001.  The regional honors are selected from the best radio and television news work in Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.    This was the first time the organization earned national Edward R. Murrow honors.

The Sago story was awarded regional awards for Best Continuing Coverage and for Best Newscast for The WCHS Morning News.

The Edward R. Murrow Awards are not the only national recognition for WCHS and MetroNews.   The organization was also recognized earlier this year with a first place Green Eyeshade Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for the coverage at Sago.

WCHS is now in its 80th year of broadcasting.  During 2007, the West Virginia Broadcasters Association gave its highest honor to WCHS as the Legendary Radio Station of the Year.    WCHS was also a finalist for the coveted Marconi Award for National Small Market Radio Station of the Year in 2006.
